Where love exists.....

The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist.
– Pope St. Gregory the Great

What are you afraid of?

It is fear that often prevents us from listening to that voice that calls us to action on behalf of others - or even ourselves. I have met many people who tell me they are concerned about certain issues and want to see things improve -but when I ask them what action they are taking, they look at me blankly. Or in fear.

Alot of people think they don't matter much and that their actions don't matter. They feel overwhelmed before they begin and afraid to take the necessary risks to try to change things for the better. Other people are apathetic, or would rather do other things with their time. Some people believe that it's better to just leave things up to others or the "next person". They don't feel a sense of responsibility for what goes on around them.

Despite the fact that people who don't take action may have different reasons, I think the underlying reason is usually fear. Alot of the rest is an attempt to rationalize not changing the status quo - particularly when there are situations that clearly call out for change.

God's love is a gift to us. We are called to act and do good works on His behalf during our time down here on earth. If you think of the concept of stewardship, this makes more sense. When we embrace and hold God's love within us, we begin to act in ways that show "love in action". As God's agents and with His help, we can effect change and help others.

Sometimes our actions may seem very small. But that doesn't matter, because our actions have a domino effect and when they are positive and loving, change can be geometric in its proportions!

In order to take action, we have to stop being negative about ourselves. We have to act with confidence even if we feel afraid. There are other people who need what we have.

Take the risk. Don't let fear keep you from acting in love, a love that God freely gave you.

I find it frustrating to watch people get stuck in their fears - or to get stuck in my own. This is a great post. So many of us complain and don't help to make change happen. Or we sit by and just watch life go by. We have to ask if we aren't willing to reach out and help, why should we expect someone else to do it? It's kind of childish.
