After reading several of these articles, plus hearing that one of the dear ladies in our church is probably going to an Assisted Living Home, rather than stay at home where she'd rather be, I can't help but be thankful that we were able to take care of my mother in her own home. We did have to move my FIL in with us, and finally into Assisted Living, but when he was too sick for them to care for, rather than put him in a Nursing Home, we brought him home with us, being cared for by loved ones. I had already signed the papers for him to go to a very nice Nursing Home, and just couldn't bring myself to do it. I knew that we had the skills to take care of him, with Hospice's help. I know there are plenty of families who have no choice but to use Nursing Homes, but I'm thankful that we did not.

Right now, we are helping my almost 102 year old Daddy stay at home, relatively independently, with a whole lot of help from us. We've been able to do this because we were in a position to retire and take care of our loved ones, something most people just wouldn't be able to do.

Of course, now, I'm paying the price for all those years of stress, physically moving dead weight, lifting wheelchairs in and out of vehicles, etc., with some yet unidentified nerve disorder, which I suspect will turn out to be pressure from a bulging disk.

I've written a new post, Thoughts on Lingering at Death's Door that deals with more on this subject, if anyone is interested.
