So here are my 5 nominees:

1. More Meredith Gould: Meredith writes with wit, humor and faith on her blog when she's not writing books and has the best piece on the Vatican turtle.

2. The Gimpy Girls: These gals write about solutions for baby boomers, the disabled and the Just Plain Lazy- another witty blog with practical suggestions!

3. Barriers, Bridges and Books: Terri writes with passion and insight about disability issues affecting all communities. She is the parent of a child with a disability and also a nurse and brings her experiences to her blog in such a helpful way that I often suggest it to parents

4. Midlife and Treachery: who writes brilliantly about inclusion at church with passages like this:

I did make it to church last weekend without getting gut sick.

[I haven't made a big deal about the sickness over there...but the speaker/officiant didn't need to squeeze my shoulder in support on their way to the pulpit the way that they did...or actually hug me (carefully) as I waited for the gimp bus to go back home...but they did.

It made me pretty (privately) emotional, a relative stranger just being nice.

5. Nick's Crusade: Nick is waiting on paperwork for his home care so he can come home after being in the hospital for six months and somehow manages to run blogswarms from his bed. 'nuff said.

As for my five addictions:

1. chocolate

2. movies - I like reading Roger Ebert's column and he's a fabulous blogger too!

3. sports! especially women's basketball

4. books - I'm always reading at least six to ten books simultaneously

5. folk music - I like to find new artists and just listen to their music

I've been given the Excellent Award for my blog from Maryellen over at Grandma's Musings. I'd like to thank her and  since I think these awards are a fun way to find new and interesting blogs, will nominate more than ten. I have been selected by Amber over at This Catholic Journey to receive this award, which is a completely unexpected surprise and much appreciated, especially since I've always felt blessed by knowing her.

About this award:
Mathetes is the Greek word for disciple. I'd like to take the opportunity to award five other bloggers with this award and badge for acting in the role of a disciple of Christ. These five all share the message in their own creative ways, and I admire them all for what they do.

In the spirit of this award, the rules are simple. Winners of this award must pick five other "disciples" to pass it on to. As you pass it on, I just ask that you mention and provide links for (1)this post as the originator of the award (Dan King of management by God),

1. Monastic Musings which is written by Sr. Edith, who writes about sociology, religion, and living the life of a disciple;
2. Title Varies Slightly, with whom I also share a fellowship on issues of inclusion;
3. From the Anchor Hold which was written by Karen Marie, who passed away recently, who exemplified the role of a disciple of Christ. Her blog is still up and is worth a visit. Knowing she had an incurable illness, she wrote three years ago: "I hope that when my time comes, and the loudspeakers start hollering about my room, that there is someone who takes pity on me and prays for me. It's on that list of the Things Catholics Do, the Works of Mercy: Pray for both the living and the dead." Now who will tell me to slow down in my wheelchair? I miss you, Karen Marie...and there are a lot of people praying ...
4. A Long Island Catholic, who cares about all of God's children as he writes about his faith
and
5. Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering - one of the bloggers who volunteers for the Catholic Carnival and generously gives of her time while at the same time is just discovering how talented a writer she is . (Those God given talents!)

Thinking blogger awards

I'd like to thank Dream Mom who recently nominated me for the Thinking blogger award. I appreciate the nomination from her especially as I always find her blog makes me think as she writes about her life raising her son who has a disability. For example,she writes "And what should I do with all of these things? If I throw them away and he dies, I have nothing. If I keep a few of them, will I wish I had saved more? I have fewer things to save, since he can’t do as much. So that makes what he does have and what he used to do, all that much more important. What do you do when they don’t make memories anymore? You look in the memory box. You open it up and remember the good times. I am certain when the time comes, I am going to need all of these things. And I bet I’ll be glad that I kept them." If that doesn't make you stop and think, I don't know what will.


As is customary, I'd like to say that the awards started here.

I'll just go ahead and nominate five blogs that make me think, as is also customary. Drum roll please!

They are:

1. Monastic Musings. It is no secret that I am a daily reader of Sr. Edith's blog. I love not only her sociological perspectives, but more importantly, her spiritual insights. Sr. Edith was reviewed in a local paper as the blogging nun and her sense of humor is wonderful. She blogs in addition to her job teaching at a university (no small feat these days), traveling, researching, writing, etc. No wonder she always has something to say that interests me and makes me think!

2. Planet of the Blind. This is another daily read for me. I enjoy Steve's poetry and literary reviews as well as his insights into disability issues and happenings. I also love Connie's posts about interesting people, links and stories. They both tell great stories that make me laugh and ....think.

3. Wheelchair Dancer. This is the blog I go to when I am looking for someone in a wheelchair to relate to on a blog. I will say I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about wheelchair dancing as an art, but most of the time I seek food for thought about living - really living - on wheels.

4. Rolling Rains Report. Scott's blog is amazing. He covers topics on travel, disability and universal design - and everything in between. Moreover, he does this in different languages and on an international level. Not only does his blog make me think, sometimes it makes my head hurt - in a good way! His blog is a great resource as well.

5. ballastexistenz Last but not least - at all - is Amanda's fabulous blog which contains so many insights about her experiences as a person with autism. She is also a disability advocate for others and writes about the perception of people with disabilities by society - and vice versa. Don't miss reading this blog.
