"Disability is a Natural Part of Life"

Over at Monastic Musings, Sr. Edith writes a post about prenatal testing and Down syndrome, bringing out the point that disability is part of life. Definitely worth a read - click above.

One of the altar servers at our church got cancer and they amputated his leg. he's coming back to serve a Mass next week and none of us know how to act around him. Like what if he falls or can he bend over if he drops something or what if one of us trips. I mean everybody is watching us all and we're kind of nervous but afraid to ask the priest what to do. Any ideas? thanks.

Rose,
I'm sure you'll get other answers on here, so check back a few more times. For starters, go here:
http://www.amputee-coalition.org/youth_inmotion.html
This is a magazine called Youth In Motion for young amputees and their friends can learn a lot from reading this.

I'm assuming that you're also an altar server from your comment. I'd suggest that you talk to your parent, priest or deacon or another adult at church about your concerns. I'm sure they will all reassure you that if anyone (it might not be your friend!) drops something, etc, it's okay. Amputees get around very well on prosthetic legs and do many things as you'll see in those magazines. I can hear how much you care about your friend and want to include him but just don't know what it will be like. So you're a bit nervous about that as are your other friends. The best thing to do is remember that he's the same exact person. My guess is he will be very happy to be back with all of you but a little nervous at first (maybe not, depends on the person). Just remember that those feelings will pass- and no one ever knows anyhow when we'll drop things or trip , do we? Between you and me, the most important thing is being together to celebrate and what a wonderful time of year for him to be returning - at Easter! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Ruth

Just be his friend is my advice.

I talked to our pastor and my dad about it . Like you said they said don't worry about anything going wrong and my dad told me about a friend he has who is disabled too. The pastor said he prays for all the altar servers and himself so nobody drops anything which was pretty funny. Anyway Easter will be fun.
