Number of Americans with disabilities growing

About one-in-five Americans now has a disability and that will increase as baby boomers age, US health officials said yesterday.

The number of Americans with a disability rose 7.7pc, or by 3.4 million people, to nearly 48 million between 1999 and 2005, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said.

This is true, but do you think the baby boomers who are aging will connect the dots regarding ableism, the social mileau and disability and that things will change???

One blogger recently wrote that appliances, equipment and other needs are all being turned into an industry catering to these boomers and their perceptions rather than really working to understand and change the mess that many of us have put up with for years...

I agree that there are industries growing up to cater to the boomers. And the problem with that is it doesn't help pwd in many areas, because they may lack the same resources. So things may change, but may not address the issues pwd face who are in a different position. This is where our advocacy needs to remain strong.
