Elevators stall, trapping residents in them, or don't work at all, causing some residents to stock up on food in case they can't get out. Or residents have to rely on one single working elevator with long waits.
For years, the building’s malfunctioning elevators have ruled the daily lives of residents, forcing elderly men and women to cancel doctor’s appointments, push their strength to the limit by taking the stairs and spend hours stuck inside their apartments or outside on the benches waiting for elevator mechanics to arrive
They also say that the figures for elevator breakdowns given by the agency seem low based on their experiences. I'm wondering how long it takes to repair an elevator that's out of service and how many days a month the elevators are actually working properly, which should be the look everyone is going for.
Elevator problems have long frustrated Kingsborough Extension residents, despite a number of failed elevator inspections, complaints from residents and the death of an 89-year-old woman in 2005 that some residents blame in part on the faulty elevators.
The problems have become so routine there that several residents talk casually about getting stuck inside the building’s elevators from 20 minutes to an hour.
...Kingsborough Extension had a total of 151 elevator failures in the 2007 and 2008 fiscal years, the most of any of the city’s 42 housing developments for the elderly, according to data from the Housing Authority. That works out to about 3.14 breakdowns each month per elevator car, the highest rate in the developments for the elderly, though Kingsborough Extension residents said the agency’s numbers seemed low.
Of the Housing Authority’s 343 developments, the Wagner Houses in East Harlem had the most failures in the 2007 and 2008 fiscal years — 2,132 — and the Manhattanville Houses in West Harlem had the most per car, averaging about 6.2 each month. via nytimes.com

How dangerous! People need those working. Sounds like they need to go with a different company or rewire them or something.
Honestly some elevators worry me. I also have the experience at one shopping center of the elevator not landing level with the floor but a few inches from it, not fun.
Frida - That's scary. When I think of all the health issues some seniors have, it's a very dangerous situation - diabetics, folks with high blood pressure, etc. possibly getting stuck on an elevator or trying to climb up all those stairs...
