"This vital legislation will open the door to full participation by people with disabilities in our neighborhoods, workplaces, economy, and our American Dream," Harkin said. This bill (Community Choice Act of 2007) will mean the difference not only between institutionalization and community living - which is huge, but the quality of community living for all PWD. (I don't know about the rest of you, but I hate relying on the kindness of strangers for help because my state is not funded adequately to give me enough aide hours.)
Click above for a list of other pro-disability legislation Harkin supports, touching on vital issues such as our access to medical equipment. There's a list to the right of this site listing the legislation he supports.
As a side note, two of my friends who have used wheelchairs for many years are being denied lightweight wheelchairs through their insurance companies for the first time - on the basis of not needing them. Neither can walk. Those of us who are in the disability community have access to information that most people don't and can help our legislators help us.
