Handicapped parking - roughing it...

Penny Richards over Temple U's disability studies blog has posted a picture of a handicapped parking spot which she likens to the surface of the moon because it's so rough - and points out that it's probably not the worst spot around even at that. It's worth taking a look at (just click above).

As unsteady as I can sometimes be on my feet, that would not be a blue spot I would use. I don't imagine wheelchair users would appreciate it, either.

How about the nice smooth ones that are a mile away from the door? Or don't have a curb ramp? The IHOP's around here are bad about that.

db - those are not good at all. My personal "unfavorite" ones are the ones on hills. Does the phrase "runaway wheelchair" (or tires while you're trying to assemble it )sound lke much fun? uhhhh noooooo

I wish I had a picture of the one at the downtown Birmingham Teacher's Credit Union. The CU is on the top of a hill, flattened out. So where do they put the blue parking space? At the end of the sidewalk, with a right angle turn to the ramp. Doesn't sound so bad? There's no rail or fence at the end of the walk, and there's a steep drop to the street below! I've complained before, but nothing has been done about it.

db that reminds me of one parking spot I used when I had to go to court once - the spot was on a steep hill (the only handicapped spot around btw) and at the bottom of the hill was a chain link fence. I transferred into my wheelchair with my briefcase and lost grip (not hard to do when you're a quad) and wound up hurtling toward the chain link fence - until someone grabbed the back of my wheelchair. egads! I did report it and they moved the spot but yikes....
