UN statistics on disabled

In this article in the Toronto Star, UN statistics on the disabled are shown.

Here are a few:

10 per cent of the world's population has a disability - it's the largest minority;

Companies report that employees with disabilities have better retention rates;

Global literacy rate is as low as 3 per cent and lower for women with disabilities;

73 per cent of employers reported that no accommodation was necessary to hire people with disabilities

90 per cent of disabled children do not attend school in developing countries [Update: less than one in three – or about 14 per cent - of the world’s children are not getting a basic education. About two-thirds of them are girls.]

As the author says, these facts blow away some misconceptions...and indicate the need for the UN treaty for the rights of the disabled around the world which was just drafted.

These are not surprising to me based on the reading I've done. How about the lack of access to equipment, even basics like wheelchairs, overseas?

Some of these stats are appalling. I had no idea that conditions were still so bad around the world. Thanks for doing this blog and bringing attention to these issues.
