Rolling into church...
...looks different from a wheelchair.
My name is Ruth. I'm a Catholic. I have a spinal cord injury and use a wheelchair.
Pews are superfluous to me because I stay in my wheelchair. So when I roll into church, I no longer head toward a pew. I roll beside one or behind one.
But that's just the visible part of being a Catholic on wheels. That's the piece people see when I come to Mass in my wheelchair.
This blog will talk about issues like that, but I'd like to get beyond that. I'd like to talk about issues such as inclusion of people with disabilties in our parishes. I'd like to start a dialogue with other Catholics about concerns, questions and progress.
I'm willing to answer questions, gather resources when I can and pray that I can be a voice for others I see going to church who are dealing with their own disability or a disability of a loved one.
It's time to truly include all Catholics - in wheelchairs, on walkers, on canes, those who are blind or deaf, autistic, mentally challenged, born with disabilities, etc.
Feel free to leave comments and ideas.
Let's roll!
