God is accessible to all - but ramps don't hurt!

It's simple - but difficult sometimes. The beginning of inclusion is providing those with disabilities access to our churches.

Newer churches have ramps built in or even landscape to allow wheelchair access. Their rest rooms and other facilities are also designed to be accessible.

But older churches are more of a problem. Some have narrow doorways or unique architectural problems. Parishioners may feel that a ramp will spoil the appearance of their church - or interfere with the ingress/egress.

Ironically, before I became disabled, I raised money for my childhood parish, Corpus Christi in South River NJ, to add a ramp in memory of a dear friend who passed away very young. It was placed at a side entrance with a small plaque dedicating it to our friend Danny. This was a great solution since the front entrance would have presented many problems!

Most parishes have more resources than they think - parishioners who are contractors, architects and other professionals are willing to help find a way to make their parish accessible. It's an opportunity to welcome all to our churches - and ramps make it easier for aging parishioners on walkers and canes - as well as moms with babies in carriages!
