Assisted suicide, a teen who becomes a quadriplegic after an accident dealt with in a British TV show. This article says in American TV this topic is the last taboo and the plot would have been written differently. Interesting read.
I've seen bits of the show and there's something I couldn't quite understand: why he's using a head-operated wheelchair. I think those kinds of switches are only used by those who can't use anything else; chin-operated joysticks are much more common here.
It's a pretty depressing end, and it's part of the tendency for British soaps to be full of pointless tragedy and misery just to keep the drama going. I've given up on EastEnders for that reason, and have come close to giving up on Casualty and Holby City (both weekly medical dramas set in the same fictional hospital) for the same reason. Yes, we did have a case of a rugby player who became a quad (C6) going to Switzerland for assisted suicide a few years ago, but there are others who lead relatively happy and successful lives with support, but that's not drama.
Haven't seen the show. Did they introduce the idea of intervention for depression for the character? So many talk about the "right" to kill yourself without thinking that maybe this person is just depressed and can be helped.
Have you seen the Euthanasia law in the Netherlands. Kids between 12 and 16 need their parents consent except in certain cases. See the link. Yikes! http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/euthanasia/eu0021.html
I watch the show and as a quad i have enjoyed the storyline. They have written/played it so well! I see bits of me in the character! I am sad they may end the story this way but this is a drama!
