The Time is Now - Pull Together

Planet of the Blind has an excellent post called The Time is now, about how very important it is for people with disabilities to pull together, united, to vote and to deal with disability rights issues. He points to the squabbling that goes on sometimes, and uses as examples people who are Deaf arguing over degrees of being Deaf. This sort of in-fighting defeats us if we let it. Those with disabilities, as he points out, are a diverse group and our fight for our rights affects many people - seniors, children with disabilities, etc.

I got your email about today's post but I want to comment on this one instead. I agree that we need to start putting aside our differences in the disabled community and work together for progress. Why can't people see that when we go out there and have to fight for rights alone we are not as powerful as when we unite? Voting is still not accessible. Buildings are not accessible. There aren't curbcuts or braille materials at places. We can't get in and participate because of the lack of awareness or refusal to change things even though we are getting educations and jobs. I can spend all week at work and then on a weekend can't join friends somewhere to eat because there are steps. So what? some disabled people tell me. We still have people who can't get in and out of their homes. I see the difference but that doesn't mean we don't need to work for accessibility in public. Let's stop the in-fighting and remember that it is ALL about rights - no matter if we disagree on how bad things have to be before we can get those rights.
