When a priest needs accessibility....

click above for an interesting article in an Assistive Technology publication about a parish priest who needed accessible arrangements due to his use of a wheelchair.

One of the things mentioned in the article is how it brought home the issue of accessibility (or lack thereof) to the congregation when it happened to their priest. There are also practical suggestions on what needed to be done.

There is a priest around here who used a wheelchair for a while and they put a ramp up to the altar so he could say Mass. I think it was temporary. I have seen churches with accessible altars when I've been traveling and that would make sense to build new churches that way. Priests can have accidents and age just like everyone else. Besides it would let those of us on wheels be a lectern and do things like that.
